Avatars, Buildings & Trezor Shop Payments

September 11, 2026

Today we’re shipping three major updates to the Erleuchtung shop system: purchasable avatars that replace your identicon on the world map, buildings you can buy and place on the country map, and full Trezor hardware wallet support for all shop payments.

Avatars — Show Your Face on the World Map

Until today, every player’s identity on the world map was a deterministic identicon — a small geometric pattern derived from your wallet address. Identicons are great for privacy and uniqueness, but they all look similar. Now you can buy a custom avatar from a shop and stand out.

How it works

  1. Shop owners create a product and set the item type to Avatar
  2. They upload an avatar image (JPEG, PNG, or WebP)
  3. Buyers purchase the avatar with CC coins
  4. The avatar lands in the buyer’s inventory
  5. The buyer opens Settings → Avatar and selects it
  6. The avatar replaces the identicon on the world map — for everyone

Automatic image optimization

Avatar images are automatically processed on upload to keep the game fast:

  • Auto-resized to 128Ă—128 pixels using high-quality image scaling
  • Cover-cropped to a square — the image is centered and cropped to the smaller dimension, so no distortion
  • Re-encoded — all metadata and embedded data are stripped
  • 512 KB upload limit — avatars are small by design; a 128Ă—128 image is typically 10–40 KB

This means even with hundreds of players using custom avatars simultaneously, map rendering stays smooth. The avatar appears as a circular image on the map, matching the existing identicon bubble style.

Reverting to identicon

Prefer the classic look? You can revert to your wallet identicon at any time. Just go to Settings → Avatar and click “Revert to Identicon”. Your purchased avatars stay in your inventory — you can switch back whenever you want.

Security

Avatar images are validated at three levels:

  1. File type verification — the file’s actual content must match its extension (JPEG, PNG, or WebP)
  2. Re-encoding — the image is decoded and re-encoded, stripping any embedded data
  3. Size enforcement — the 512 KB limit prevents oversized uploads

Players cannot use arbitrary external image URLs as avatars. The avatar is always derived from a shop product image that has been processed and stored on our servers.

Buildings — Buy and Place on the Country Map

The country map has eight building types: schools, universities, villages, cities, metropoles, hospitals, marketplaces, and culture centers. Until now, these were placed through the existing build system. Now shop owners can sell buildings as single-use items that players purchase and place themselves.

How it works

  1. Shop owners create a product and set the item type to Building
  2. The product’s SKU field specifies the building type (school, university, village, city, metropole, hospital, marketplace, or culture)
  3. Buyers purchase the building with CC coins
  4. The building lands in the buyer’s inventory as a single-use item
  5. The buyer places the building on the country map via the existing build interface
  6. One building item is consumed per placement — buy 5 schools, place 5 schools

Safe placement

If a building can’t be placed (reserved location, existing building, invalid coordinates), the item is not consumed. You never lose a building item from a failed placement.

What buildings don’t do

  • Buildings are not research-center or progression buildings (research centers, spaceports, space stations, moon bases, etc. remain collective donation concepts)
  • Buildings are single-use — once placed, they’re consumed. You can’t pick them up and move them
  • Buildings follow all existing placement rules: grid coordinates, country boundaries, reserved community-building locations, and shop pin collision checks

Trezor Hardware Wallet Support for Shop Payments

This is the fix many of you have been waiting for. If you log in with a Trezor hardware wallet, you can now buy products and subscribe to shops without being asked for a software wallet password.

The problem

Previously, shop payments only supported software wallets. When a Trezor user tried to pay, the system tried to unlock a software wallet (which doesn’t exist for hardware wallet users) and showed an error message instead of using the Trezor device for signing.

The fix

Shop payments now detect when you’re logged in with Trezor and route the payment through your hardware device:

  1. You click “Pay” in the shop
  2. The system detects your Trezor login
  3. You confirm the transaction on your Trezor device
  4. The signed transaction is submitted to the network
  5. Once confirmed, your order is complete

The existing software wallet path is unchanged. Software wallet users see no difference.

Cross-tab session fix

We also fixed a related bug: your Trezor login status was only remembered in the current browser tab. If you logged in on the main game page and then opened the shop in a new tab, the shop page couldn’t detect that you were a Trezor user — so it fell back to the password prompt.

Your login status is now shared across all tabs in the same browser, so the shop page, settings page, and any other page can detect your Trezor login regardless of which tab you logged in from.

Shop Storage Limits — Per-Tier Quotas

Also in this release: each shop subscription tier now has a storage quota that limits the total size of download files and product images a shop can hold.

TierProduct limitStorage limitPrice/month
1 — Starter1050 MB€0.50
2100200 MB€1
31,0001 GB€2
410,0005 GB€3
5100,00025 GB€5
6 — Enterprise1,000,000100 GB€50

When a shop reaches its storage limit, new uploads are rejected. The shop owner dashboard shows a progress bar with current usage, so you always know how much space you have left.

This prevents a Starter shop (€0.50/month) from uploading gigabytes of files.

Item Types in the Shop Owner Product Editor

Shop owners now see an Item Type dropdown when creating or editing a product:

Item TypeDescription
ProductRegular shop item (default — physical or digital, as before)
AvatarReplaces the buyer’s identicon on the world map. Auto-resized to 128×128px. Max 512 KB per image.
BuildingSingle-use item consumed when placed on the country map. SKU field = building type.

When a shop owner selects Avatar or Building, the product is automatically marked as digital (no shipping regions needed). The digital checkbox is locked on — you can’t accidentally set an avatar as a physical product with shipping.

What’s Next

  • Building inventory UI — We’re working on showing owned building types in the build menu, so you can see which buildings you have available before placing them
  • More avatar options — Shop owners can already sell avatars; we’re exploring themed avatar packs and limited-edition event avatars
  • Shop owner analytics — Download counts, view counts, and sales metrics

Deployment Status

All features in this post are currently live on our Beta environment for community testing. After testing is complete, they will be rolled out to all production servers.

If you have access to Beta, please test:

  1. Buy an avatar from a shop → select it in Settings → check the world map
  2. Buy a building from a shop → place it on the country map
  3. Pay with Trezor → confirm the transaction on your device

Report any issues in the community chat or to support@getplasma.org.
